Electricity has become so commonplace in our technologically advanced world, that it can be difficult to imagine life without light bulbs and modern appliances. However, it is incredible how much the discovery and implementation of electrical currents has changed the course of human history in the past century. At Mr. Electric of Dallas, we offer premium residential and commercial electrical services for property owners in Dallas, Fort Worth and surrounding North Texas neighborhoods. Have you often wondered how electricity has evolved over the years? Here are some of the highlights of the history of electricity.

The Early Days of Electricity

The first documented discovery of electricity goes back to ancient times, as early as 500 B.C. Thales of Miletus noticed that static electricity was created when fur and amber made contact. However, electricity was not understood in the same capacity as today until the 17th century, when William Gilbert published his book about electrical theory, De Magnete. Further discoveries and advancements were made in this field of study by prominent scientists like Robert William Boyle, Benjamin Franklin, George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison.

The Battle Over AC and DC

The History of Electricity

At the turn of the 20th century, the industrial revolution sparked debates about the best way to carry electrical technology into the new era. Nikola Tesla preferred AC, claiming that power could be converted to lower or higher voltages with better efficiency. However, Thomas Edison believed that AC was too dangerous and promoted DC. Eventually, Tesla’s AC became the American standard due to its ability to distribute electricity more cheaply in large urban areas.
