Have you crossed most of your spring cleaning tasks off the to-do list, but the cobwebs and dust on your light fixtures are still there? Cleaning your sconces, lamps and pendants doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. At Mr. Electric of Dallas, we provide high quality residential and commercial electrical services for local property owners, including new light fixture installations and replacements. We enjoy helping North Texas home and business owners get the most from their indoor and outdoor lighting systems, and we want you to experience the same results in your home. Here are some tips on how to clean your light fixtures.

Prioritize the Safety of Yourself and Others

Before you begin removing the fixtures for cleaning, be sure to take the appropriate safety precautions. Always shut off the power at the breaker box before you begin working with any household item that is wired into your electrical system.  Neglecting to do this could result in personal injury and property damage. It’s also recommended to wait at least 30 minutes after turning the light off before touching the bulbs to avoid accidental burns.

Cleaning Basic Light Fixtures

The Best Way to Clean Light Fixtures

Ceiling mounted fixtures and other simple designs can be easily cleaned using a microfiber duster or cloth and soapy water. Cautiously remove the light cover and soak in the soapy water for at least 10 minutes, then wipe clean. Unscrew the light bulbs and remove dust with a dry, soft rag. Allow the items to dry fully and replace securely.

Recessed can lights, chandeliers and ornate light fixtures may require a little extra care. You may need to use cotton swabs to clean inside hard to reach areas. Heavy glass pendants will sometimes require more than one person to handle safely. Items that are located on vaulted ceiling or high elevations will likely call for the use of an extension ladder.

Make Antique Metal Shine

Antique brass, silver and gold plated fixtures may still look dingy after cleaning due to age. Remove the tarnish with ketchup. Use warm, soapy water to get rid of dust and grime, then use a thin layer of ketchup and gently rub onto the surface of the fixture. Wipe clean and apply a finishing oil for optimal brilliance.
