Knob-and-tube wiring, often referred to as K&T wiring, is one of the earliest wiring methods. Installed from the 1880s to the 1940s, it was once the standard for electrical wiring in the U.S. and other parts of North America. This type of wiring was largely phased out by 1950, but it can still be found in some homes built before that era. Knob-and-tube wiring should be replaced with modern wiring to enhance electrical safety.
Knob-and-tube wiring is an early electrical system that uses single-insulated copper conductors. The wires are supported by ceramic knobs attached to framing members and protected by ceramic tubes when passing through wood. Unlike modern wiring systems, knob-and-tube does not include a ground wire.
